Baby's World educates parents
on bringing 'little one' home
Having a baby is one of the most
exciting times in a person's life. It can also be a time filled
with anxiety.
What if there was a store that could help prepare a woman for birth
and the months to follow, as well as supply everything they could
possibly need to purchase- Scott and Suzy Savage had a vision for
a place that could provide this service all under one roof.
This new Abbotsford store is called
Baby's World, and to the best
of the Savage's knowledge, it is the only one like it in Canada
or the United States.
Scott has had many years' experlence operating three WhiteSpot restaurants,
two of which are in the Fraser Valley. Suzy is a Grade 3 schoolteacher.
They saw a huge need for a store such as Baby's World. "We did
our homework," said Scott.
Five years of research included a market study based on demographics,
and a large telephone survey.
"There was a definite 'green light' to begin!" said Scott.
They spent many months talking with moms and listening to what they
wanted, said Scott.
What they liked and disliked about the stores they had previously
shopped in. "We found there is a huge fear about bringing a child
home," said Scott.
All this information helped
them design their new store. Baby's World is a whole new concept
in shopping. This is evident from the moment you walk through the
door into the spacious 4,000 square-foot store.
To the left is a "mud room," well stocked with a variety of buggies,
strollers and car seats.
When a woman comes through the door
lugging a baby in a car seat, they are encouraged to place them
in a loaner stroller for the time they are visiting.
Next stop is the "family room" complete with comfy chairs and a
fireplace where customers can sit and mull over their choices, while
an adjoining entertainment centre with toys and videos occupies
the older children.
On to the fully functional kitchen, outfitted with cupboards, stove
and dishwasher all equipped with safety devices. Every display room
in Baby's World is "child-proofed",
said Scott, and customers will be shown how these "sometimes complicated
looking" contraptions are installed.
Baby's World
also offers free assessments on baby-proofing your home and an installation
service is also available. "Canadian safety standards are much higher
than the States," said Scott, which is comforting news to parents
who have so many products to choose from.
All the stock in Baby's World
including toys, activity centres and safety devices are out of the
package, Scott explained. "Part of the anxiety (for parents) is
not being able to touch things first, and see how they work." Baby's
World has seven display bedrooms decorated in different
themes.
They carry 25 lines of bedding and accessories, and their store
has the exclusive rights on 16 of them, said Scott.
"Every room is done in modern colours to capture the imagination."
The selection of beautiful clothing
is available in sizes all the way to 6x and five of the clothing
lines are exclusive to the Valley.
The store even offers a gift registry and shares advice on baby
showers. Baby's World also serves
as an information and learning network.
They coordinate free St. John Ambulance and CPR courses, labour
support, baby massage sessions, and Kindermusic, Scott said.
Weekly classes show customers how to use baby equipment. The store
carries a wide array of information books from pregnancy to living
with a toddler. And of course they have a wonderful selection of
books, tapes, and CD's for babies and children. The staff at Baby's
World is called "advisors", and all are well-versed in
motherhood.
Their name tags will say "mother of two" for example. "There are
20 babies within our group," said Scott. "Our store has absolutely
everything you'd need for a baby's world," said Scott. "Half our
job is service, and half is to educate."
