Tips when buying a quality crib…

1. There are 3 main types of hardware, exposed hardware (metal rods, most company's are phasing out), semi-hidden hardware (very popular now, European influenced), hidden hardware (can't see it, found on most high-end cribs). When purchasing semi-hidden hardware ensure that the hardware is made from Graphite or Nylon compounds, NOT PLASTIC! If the hardware is glossy shiny BEWARE, it will generally be made of plastic and it will break.
   
2. Almost all cribs are put together the same way, ensure that all the crib screws, screw into metal fasteners. Some crib manufacturers use wood screws that screw directly into the wood, (not good) they will eventually strip.
   
3. BIGGEST SAFEY FEATURE on a crib is the box spring or mattress support. All good quality cribs have METAL MATTRESS SUPPORTS. If the mattress is held up by wood supports a toddler may grow to be too heavy for the support, be very cautious.
   
4. Look to see how that mattress support is attached to the crib. Ensure it is screwed into the frame of the crib on all four sides, with metal into metal screws. Some crib manufacturers have you hook the mattress support onto the sides, think of what could happen when your child starts to jump.
   
5. Lastly, look for a stabilizer bar at the front of the crib. The stabilizer bar generally looks like a wooden stick that is screwed into both ends of the crib, and is found behind the door. If you find one, it would mean that the crib would turn into a toddler bed, thus giving extended life out of your crib usually another 2 to 2 1/2 years more life. A toddler bed conversion also means you would also get extended life out of the mattress and bedding, generally up to 4 or more years.
